NEWS SOUNDSAM PHAT FUEL DJ MIXES DISCOGRAPHY MASTERING SERVICES VIDEO

Phat Fuel also offer mastering services for labels and artists. If you would like to try it out you can send requests to mastering(at)phatfuelrecords(dot)com.

The idea of this mastering service is that it's cheaper than most, and quality proof. If you don't like what you hear, you don't have to pay anything.

Most mastering services around are far to overpriced in my mind. And it should be availbe for indie artists to get a good result without emptying theire pockets.

Standard fee is 250 NOK per track, and I don't deliver anything I'm not satisfied with, cause of my affection for sound. I don't run the tracks through any hardware or converters to be sure I don't degrade any audio.

Before mastering:

The most important jobb on getting the sound right, doesn't start at mastering, but your mixing. And then the next stage should be done by some neutral ears. Mix as good as possible for a great mastering result. You should be aware of that the comfort zone in volume on master channel is between -6dB and -3dB at maximum and no clipping. Be sure that you dont just turn down the master channel, but make the whole mix in the comfort zone from the start. Mastering is important but you can't do everything. The file format should be at least 44100hz and 24 bit depth WAV or AIFF. Remember to turn of all compressors, limiters, maximizers, eq's and clippers. If it is an other effect (like filter or flanger) that is automated or is part of the track, you can keep it offcourse.

Among the gear used:

- Art Acoustics CL1 Compressor/Limiter - Software - (One of the coolest soft compressor I've ever tried, and with superb sound!)

- PSP Oldtimer Compressor - Software - (With some of the same Mid-Side compression technique as the CL1, which make an unbelievable much better stereo field, and fantastic tube or clean sound options. Excellent!)

- Waves C4 Multiband Compressor - Software - (Multiband compression is used as problemsolvers mostly, use them right to get great result.)

- Aphex 109 Equalizer via Waves Q Clone - Hardware/Software - Aphex 109 is a great tube eq for the money, and the top end is magical. Via Q Clone realtime EQ emulator.)

- PSP NobleQ Equalizer - Software - (Outstanding soft EQ with tube options.)

- Sonalksis Stereo Tools - Software - (The most handy stereo tools around, and with the "zero- stereo- below- Hz" makes it great for mastering for vinyl or to control that bass.)

- T- Racks Classic Suite - Software - (Great plugins for different tasks. The clipper is excellent.)

- Waves Q10 Equalizer - Software - (An excellent surgical EQ for precission jobs.)

- Sonnox Oxford Inflator - Software - (Lovley to boost signal with tube saturation- like effect.)

- Nomad Factory Magnetic - Software - (Glue, punch, glue punch!)

- Pluss occational other plugins...
